Biomass Testing

Biomass, and the issues surrounding biomass utilisation in the UK, is one of our areas of expertise.  We have considerable experience in:

  • efficiency and environmental performance assessment of biomass burning domestic appliances (we are, after all, the UK’s only UKAS accredited solid fuel test laboratory)
  • research assignments and scientific investigations on various biomass energy and environmentally related projects.
  • long experience of the often overlooked problems associated with the transport and handling of biomass
  • biomass fuel handling, storage, combustion technology and experience of working with manufacturers and developers of such technology
  • on-site and in-laboratory performance testing of biomass technologies from domestic scale through to industrial plant
  • pertinent legislation and regulations relating to the installation and utilisation of such technology
  • We test biomass boilers on client sites to BS58455.

A considerable increase in biomass systems is anticipated over the next decade, thanks to the benefits in cost and carbon reduction. Reliability and safety are vital. The implementation of biomass presents a new set of design challenges for even established boiler manufacturers and installers.

We do biomass appliance testing, biomass controls and components testing, and biomass fuel testing.

These Health and Safety in Biomass Boilers documents were presented and released at the Combustion Engineering Association / Carbon Trust Biomass health & safety workshop recently.

Why Kiwa?

We have a good appreciation of the issues surrounding biomass utilisation in the UK. Our experience of all parts of the biomass chain ranges from production, handling, processing (especially combustion) and waste handling, to related environmental issues on all levels.

We have extensive experience in efficiency and environmental performance assessment of biomass burning domestic appliances (we are, after all, the UK’s only UKAS accredited solid fuel test laboratory).

Our staff have genuine hands-on experience of biomass technology, in particular to:

  • biomass fuel handling, storage, combustion technology and experience of working with manufacturers and developers of such technology,
  • on-site and in-laboratory performance testing of biomass technologies from domestic scale through to industrial plant using a wide range of appropriate standards
  • pertinent legislation and regulations relating to the installation and utilisation of such technology.
