Biomass Appliance Testing

We do biomass appliance testing, biomass controls and components testing, and biomass fuel testing.

A considerable increase in biomass systems is anticipated over the next decade, thanks to the benefits in cost and carbon reduction. Reliability and safety are vital. The implementation of biomass presents a new set of design challenges for even established boiler manufacturers and installers. The consequences of poor pellet quality and operation are serious.

This Health and Safety in Biomass Boilers document were presented and released at the Combustion Engineering Association / Carbon Trust Biomass health & safety workshop recently. We have a good appreciation of the issues surrounding biomass utilisation in the UK. Our experience of all parts of the biomass chain ranges from production, handling, processing (especially combustion) and waste handling, to related environmental issues on all levels.

We have extensive experience in efficiency and environmental performance assessment of biomass burning domestic appliances (we are, after all, the UK’s only UKAS accredited solid fuel test laboratory). Our staff have genuine hands-on experience of biomass technology, in particular:

• biomass fuel handling, storage, combustion technology and experience of working with manufacturers and developers of such technology

• on-site and in-laboratory performance testing of biomass technologies from domestic scale through to industrial plant using a wide range of appropriate standards

• pertinent legislation and regulations relating to the installation and utilisation of such technology

Who is this for?

Manufacturers, importers and suppliers of biomass appliances, often requiring a report to allow their appliance to get exemption under the Clean Air Act for installations in smokeless zones.

Why Kiwa?

We have extensive experience in solid fuel and combustion. Testing is one of our particular areas of expertise, and we have full testing facilities. We work closely with the Regulator (AEA Technology on behalf of DEFRA), so we understand fully every aspect of current regulations.
